Vita-E Vitamin E Moisturiser Review

I recently saw on Twitter a company asking for bloggers to come forward and try one of their new products. So I replied and shortly after received a sample of Vita-E cream, which is a natural vitamine E moisturiser.
I’ve been using it for a little while on my hands, as with the frequent handwashing in nursing it can leave my hands feeling dry, Vitamin E is apparently a powerful antioxidant.

Vita-E Vitamin E Moisturiser Review

If I’m honest, at first I was a bit sceptical, it didn’t really seem to be doing much. However after using it for almost a week of being in placement I noticed that my hands were considerably less dry and the skin around my nails didn’t tear as easily as it usually does. I can’t really think of anything else that would have protected my hands, so I’m going to say it was probably the cream.
It’s un-scented and reminds me of the cream you put on baby bottoms :) Which is a compliment. You know, the huge jars of creamy white which you slather on in big dollops? No? I know what I mean anyway.
The ingredients list is short; Vitamin E, Polar Wax, Solan-E, Novol, Liquid Paraffin, Bronopol, Sorbitol and Purified Water. I don’t know what most of that means, but the skin is very good on sensitive skin. My Mum has dry skin and she’s used it and really likes it.
Surprisingly, despite my oily skin on my face this hasn’t actually aggravated my face’s spot-prone nature. I can’t say it’s stopped any spots, but it’s definitely not caused any more than I would normally have.

Rating: 6/10. I gave this cream a proper test, probably the most difficult that I’ve ever given a product (apart from when I did a gym test of Urban Decay Primer Potion – That was fun!) And to say that it managed to survive and even help my hands is a bonus. It didn’t really do much for my face, however it didn’t do any bad things so I can’t really mark it down. It’s marketed as an all-over body moisturiser and it does its job.
I’m not sure about the long-term benefits that vitamin E has on the skin, but I’ll probably carry this in my bag for when I’m at placement and keep using it regardless. It’s a shame it wasn’t in a little tube rather than a pot, but that’s okay. It just means I have to carry it in my bag instead of in my pocket.

*Product kindly received as a PR sample for consideration as a company representative asked for volunteers via Twitter. Opinions are – as always – honest and unchanged regardless of the product’s source. I have not been asked or paid to write this review in return for this product.

April Glossybox Review

I swore I’d unsubscribe from Glossybox but by the time I got around to it they’d already taken payment for my April box.
So reluctantly I opened it with the decision to review.

April Glossybox Review

Glossybox seem to have somewhat made up for their farce of a box they called their “Harrods Edition,” with an organic/natural selection this month.
Featuring one of my favourite brands, and one that I posted about just yesterdayInika.

Inika Cosmetics Certified Organic Eyeliner in Graphite
You all know I love Inika, I don’t have much to say about this product in that case. The colour is a dark grey, which I probably won’t use, but I like Inika and the quality of the product, as always, is fantastic. It doesn’t snag, the formula is creamy and lasts a long time. The one I received is full size which is worth £11.75 and there is a 25% off discount if you enter GBX0412 at the checkout on Inika’s website. If you’d like to see more Inika reviews you can check out my collection, which is expanding as we speak.

Rating: 9/10. I love Inika, but I probably won’t use the colour. Can’t fault Inika for that.

Caudalie Vinosource Thirst-Quenching Serum
An ultra-concentrated, natural and plant-based serum is what the leaflet tells me. It’s a very liquid and very runny, pale, milky fluid which doesn’t really smell that nice.

Rating: 1/10. I tried using the serum on my face and it made absolutely no difference to my skin whatsoever. The smell lasted quite a while and I felt my skin was quite oily after using it so had to wash my face. I can still smell it and I really don’t like it. It’s a 10ml sample size and the full. 30ml size is £29. No thanks.

Ayuuri Natural Body Wash in Coconut
I have way too many shower gels/body washes as it is, but there’s always room in my life for more coconut-scented things! I really loooove the smell of this. My one contains coconut, aloe vera and jasmine, apparently designed to moisturise the body and calm the mind. It works well as a bubble bath as well as a body wash :D

Rating: 7/10. Beauty boxes need to stop giving out shower gel each time, it’s getting boring. However, as the actual product itself is really nice I can’t mark it lower than a 7. The size is 200ml, which is a full sized sample worth £4.95.

April Glossybox Review

Figs & Rouge Lip Balm in Rambling Rose
I was happy to see this, a brand I haven’t heard of. Figs & Rouge’s Lip Balm can also be used on the face and body – or so the packaging says. I wouldn’t risk that with my oily skin. The balm is like petroleum jelly (Vaseline,) but I find the formula to be a bit thinner and it’s a little bit lumpy. It has an odd texture in the pot but feels fine on the skin. I tested it only on the back of my hand because the smell of rose makes me feel sick.

Rating: 4/10. The smell is just too off-putting for me. I don’t know if anyone got any of the other versions available, but if anyone got the tea tree and peppermint version I’d happily trade you for the rose one. Mine has only had my (clean) finger tip dipped in it to do a swatch on the back of my hand.

And the perfume sample isn’t worth reviewing – I didn’t like it.

This now brings the history with Glossybox to here;
My first one, fantastic, I use the hand gel daily on the wards, used the shower gel and my Mum loved the lip tint and hair oil.
Second one, The “Harrods” Edition. Terrible. Products were not even remotely tailored towards my ‘beauty profile.’ Giving someone with oily skin this stuff was just stupid.

This one? Actually, it’s okay. Maybe it’s because I like Inika, maybe because I like the smell of coconut, but I’d say that this box brings Glossybox to a 2:1 ratio of acceptable/good:bad. Then again, I look at what I got from the box and remember that I paid £10 for this :/

At the end of the day, I already know and own a lot of Inika’s products and I could just buy coconut shower gel in Tesco… But still, not bad. I don’t like the smell of rose, so if anyone has the tea tree and peppermint version of the Figs & Rouge Balm I’ll happily trade.

I’m considering keeping my subscription for one more month, if the good:bad ratio gets 2:2 then I’m done. I don’t know really. I’ll see how I feel in May.

Overall rating: 6/10. Not sure whether I’ll stay subbed or not. Maybe I’ve just been unlucky.

Inika Mineral Eyeshadow Swatches | Chocolate Box

I’ve noticed recently that a lot of people are trying to hunt down some nice, mineral make-up and one thing that seems to be lacking is colour.
You guys already know I like Inika, (especially their brushes, their kabuki brush is beautiful, and I recently got a few more of their brushes that I’ll write about, they’re equally as nice,) so it should come as no surprise that I’ve been recommending them to people over Twitter and other outlets when people ask for mineral/organic brands.

Inika Mineral Eyeshadow Swatches Chocolate Box Review IMG_4416Inika Mineral Eyeshadow Swatches Chocolate Box Review IMG_4417

I recently managed to get one of the Inika Chocolate Boxes, which contains a selection of 6 limited edition mineral eyeshadow colours and – as a bonus – 3 Belgian chocolates! The chocolate was nice, I’ll tell you that much, but the eyeshadows are far nicer.

I’ve already reviewed two of Inika’s eyeshadows, as well, and found them to be wonderfully pigmented and long-lasting, even without a primer.

Inika Mineral Eyeshadow Swatches Chocolate Box Review IMG_4418

The six shades from top left are; Lemon Cream (which for some reason has the wrong sticker on it,) Mint Choc Chip, Creme Caramel, Turquoise Liquor, Coffee Cream and Licorice.

Inika Mineral Eyeshadow Swatches Chocolate Box Review IMG_4421

And as above.
These are about two swipes of an eyeshadow brush each, you can see the pigmentation. This is without a primer, (shame on you if you don’t use one, though!) so you can see just how pigmented they are alone.
All of the shades have some degree of shimmer to them apart from Licorice, which is a very, very, pigmented, dark and pure black. I love it more than any of the others. I usually use Blackout, from Urban Decay’s Naked 2 Palette, but I’ve now added Licorice to my make-up bag (which is getting too full now, I think I need to do an audit.)

I’m going to rate each colour separately.

Lemon Cream – 6. Not a big fan of the colour really, it’s not quite gold but not quite as ‘lemon’ as I’d like. Perhaps if it were lighter and maybe more neon-ish I’d like it, but I’m not a huge fan. Although I say above that each swatch has two swipes with a brush, the stroke I used with Lemon Cream was considerably heavier than the others because I realised that the colour is a little less pigmented for this one and it comes across quite sheer. Would be nice for a summery pink and yellow smoky eye though, but not my thing. Inika says that it can be used as a highlighter or blended with some of the browns. I think I’ll have a play and see what I come up with.

Mint Choc Chip – 8. It’s green. What else can I say? It’s a bit more on the blue-toned side than Kingfisher, so doesn’t quite knock Kingfisher off of my top spot for the greens, but it’s still a nice colour. It doesn’t really go with my eyes, but I think I could work with it as it blends beautifully so would make a really nice gradient if I were to experiment. It has potential, I just don’t know how to use it yet.

Creme Caramel – 7. A nice orange-bronze, or even copper. I thought this was going to be a bit lighter but it wasn’t. Personally, I have a lot of eyeshadows similar to this one in the Urban Decay Naked 2 Palette, so it won’t be getting too much use, but if you’re after a small, pocket-sized bronze to top you up on the go it’s a great alternative to carrying around the whole Naked 2 Palette. I’ll add it to my second, mini make-up bag. Inika say that this can also be used as a highlighter.

Turquoise Liquor – 8. For a minute there I thought I had a powdered dupe for the Maybelline Color Tattoo 24Hr in Turquoise Forvr, but no. I think I prefer this one. It’s not quite as deep as Turquoise Forvr and is more of a sky blue, which I really like. I don’t have anything quite like it in my stash already, so it wins points for being unique.

Coffee Cream – 6. A brown-bronze, it doesn’t really suit me, plus I have many similar shades in the Naked 2 Palette, it just doesn’t excite me so much. Good for the neutral smoky eye though.

Licorice – 10. – Hands down, I’m saying now, Licorice is a Holy Grail product for me. It’s my new black liner for tight-lining (it can be used wet for an even more dramatic look or dry for a smokier one,) and it also works as a base for smoky eyes really well, due to the blending properties. I’m serious though, scroll back up and look at that swatch, daaaamn.

Inika Mineral Eyeshadow Swatches Chocolate Box Review IMG_4425

Overall rating: 8/10. The box itself is a little on the expensive side, coming in at £75 for the 6 eyeshadows plus 3 Belgian chocolates, but, Inika is a luxury, organic, vegan-friendly mineral branded company – if any of these things matter to you (luxury = quality in this case and the eyeshadows being mineral is a huge thing for me,) then it’s worth what you pay. The little pots will last a while, especially if you use water when applying them as they are so pigmented and will last up to 16 hours, (I tested them, the darker colours obviously lasted longer.) The best thing is that they don’t seem to crease, especially if you’re using a primer, and I think that’s down to the mineral composition. They don’t end up half way down my face, either, despite my oily skin.

However…

If you haven’t used Inika products before I’d recommend you just buy one of their potted eyeshadows as a test first. Why? Because, if you’re anything like me, you’re probably a cynic. And cynics don’t usually like spending a lot of money on things that they haven’t tried for themselves. If I hadn’t have enjoyed the previous eyeshadows I posted about I probably wouldn’t have gone for this box, but as it stands, Inika have some of the best eyeshadows I’ve ever used due to longevity, intensity and their composition.

*Products kindly provided by Inika for my consideration. I am a (I think their only, currently,) brand ambassador for Inika, and although I am, my opinions are – as always – honest and unchanged regardless of the product’s source. I have not been asked, persuaded or paid to write this review in return for these products. If I didn’t like their products I wouldn’t put an unpaid, unrequested link in my sidebar for them, trust me. ;P

Osmo Berber Oil Collection, Little Luxuries – A Haircare Review

So, you know how I always complain about my greasy/oily hair? When someone from Osmo contacted me after I replied to a Tweet of theirs I was hesitant when they asked if I wanted to review some travel minis from their Berber Oil collection called Little Luxuries. However, they seemed pretty sure that it would still work for me as their products are for all hair types, so I figured I’d give it a go. And besides, I thought, if it all goes wrong? People say I don’t do enough negative reviews.
Well. If you’re looking for that negative review you’re in the wrong place – mostly.

Osmo Berber Oil Collection Review

The travel kit I received contained mini tubes of their Berber Oil Shampoo, Berber Oil Mask and Berber Oil.
The Berber Oil collection’s products all contain a mix of luxury oils, most notably avocado oil and argan oils, but if you click on one of the pictures below can see the ingredients to all of the products.

First I tried the shampoo. It’s a beautiful, golden honey-like colour, that smells like sweet spices. You know the scented candles you can get around Christmas time? It smells like that. That, and mulled wine. It’s a nice smell. The shampoo is meant to have good cleansing effects, which is handy for my hair, and it did leave it squeaky clean – literally. As I wrung the water out of my hair before putting conditioner on, it squeaked. It wasn’t a very pleasant sound, but at least I knew my hair was clean. I was a little worried that it might strip all of the natural oils (not the excess ones, they can go,) out of my hair, but I followed up with the deep conditioning mask.

I used the mask for about 10 minutes, even though it says 5 minutes because I felt like it. This was the one I was worried about though when it came to the oily aftermath. But again, I was pleasantly surprised when I realised just how soft my hair was when I washed the mask out.

I’ve been using this combo for a few days now at night before I sleep. Considering I’m waking up at 5:15am in order to walk/bus to my placement and then spend 7.5 hours with patients in an inpatient mental health environment, my hair usually looks like crap by the time I get home. If I’m honest, by the time I get home, even if I use this shampoo/conditioner combo, my hair still looks like crap. But it doesn’t help that I’ve been walking home in the wind/rain for the last few days. And when I’m at placement I have to have my hair tied up (ugh,) so my hair gets a bit messed up.

I would say that if I used the mask in the mornings I would have much better luck, but as it is, because I sleep after washing my hair (I am not having a bath at 4:30am or something stupid, then I’d have to dry my hair with a hairdryer and I hate using that kinda stuff on my hair, I’m a natural girl,) Sorry, lost track… Oh yeah. Because I sleep after washing my hair I guess all the lovely smoothness has settled by the time I actually get to work and get home. On the positive side, it’s still smooth by the morning which makes it incredibly easy to tie my hair up and sort it out, and as I have to do it so early in the morning any help is a blessing. In that respect, the shampoo/mask combo does have results.

They’re better than my Tresemme, but not quite as good as Percy & Reed, but Osmo are about half the price of the Percy & Reed products, so a much more purse-friendly alternative, especially if you’re someone who has to shampoo/condition their hair daily.
For that, I’d give both the shampoo and mask..

Rating: 7/10. I’d say that the shampoo and conditioner sit nicely as a middle of the range product. Better than stuff you’ll pick up in Tescos for sure, but not quite as good as Percy & Reed (they’re the only more luxury haircare brand I have to reference at the moment, not intending to keep pushing them.) However, the price also reflects that and at approximately £6 for a full size bottle of their shampoo I’d say that Osmo gives pretty good value for money.
If you hair isn’t quite as oily as mine then you’d probably have longer-lasting results. As it is at the moment, the products do leave my hair nice, soft and definitely very clean, but due to my specific hair type it just doesn’t protect me as long as I’d like.

Osmo Berber Oil Collection Review

As for the Berber Oil itself, I thought I’d rate this one separately.

The product smells like fizzy strawberry laces crossed with a candle shop and has now made me crave fizzy strawberry laces REALLY badly. Damn. Aside from that, the product just doesn’t work for me. It’s a hair oil designed to use while the hair is dry to promote shine or wet to promote movement. For me? It just makes my hair greasy.
However, there is a but.
I gave this product to my Mum instead.

My Mum and I are polar opposites, she’s tall and thin, has dry skin and dry hair, I’m.. Well, the opposite. We don’t share the same interests, have completely different styles, you wouldn’t even know we were related. So when products don’t work for me I usually give them to her to use and report back to me with.

My Mum really likes it. She says it tames her hair when there’s flyaways, because she sometimes gets a bit of frizz going (she blow-dries, dyes and straightens her hair, I do none of those things.) She uses it dry and hasn’t had a chance to use it wet yet, but so far so good. She says it’s non-sticky (which is true,) and just leaves her hair feeling extremely soft. Not much shinier than normal, but definitely a nice little product.

(My rating) Rating: 3/10. I have oily hair. Add oil = bad.
(My Mum’s) Rating: 8/10. She has dry hair. Add oil = good! Smooth, smells nice and a little goes a long way, she says.

You can get your own 10ml sample of the oil here. (Don’t worry, it’s not an affiliate link, if you’re paranoid visit their home page and just click on the big image that says “Order your FREE 10ml sample now.”) If you want to try it yourself.

In fairness, I did know that I was getting oil products (the name, duh,) but the shampoo and conditioners did surprise me with how they came out on my hair. I’ve almost completely used the conditioner up, because I’ve been using it as not only a mask but as a regular conditioner too. I think my plan will be to buy the full sized bottle and use it only as a deep mask, then use my other shampoo and conditioners as normal. I’ve been looking for a good deep conditioning mask lately but have been too busy to go shopping for one, so I think I’ll order myself a full sized Osmo mask, mainly because I’m lazy and when I find something I actually like I can’t be bothered to search for a better one in case I waste my time and end up with a worse one :P

Benefit Refined Finish Facial Polish Review (And a bit of an update.)

I really need to write-up my skincare regime, because a few people have asked, but I’m just being lazy.
I’ve been using this product for a while now, Benefit Refined Finish Facial Polish. It’s a fairly coarse scrub in a creamy base which is meant to be used once or twice a week (no more, because it can be irritable for those with very sensitive skin, but so can any scrub.)
I’ve had it for around three months now I think and I’ve been using it twice a week, alternating it with my Benefit Foamingly Clean Facial Wash. The two are from the same range and work really well together. Typically when I get a breakout I’ll switch to using the scrub for the day instead of the usual wash, (I also use a wash/scrub/mask 3 in one by Garnier every evening which I will one day blog about.)

Benefit Refined Finish Facial Polish Review and Swatch

I don’t like washing my face in the morning, I know you should do it – and I do – but I always end up getting my fringe wet and that annoys me. Regardless, I take some warm water and a flannel, wet my face just using my wet hands and rub the Facial Polish in to my face, paying special attention to my T-zone – my forehead and down my nose – and my chin. I also seem to get spots around my cheeks if I’m having a particularly oily time (probably to do with hormones and such,) but in general I apply the product to my whole face, focusing on the areas mentioned. I do this for about 5 minutes, buffing the product in gentle circles.
Then I wash it off by getting my flannel in warm water and just wiping the product off of my face.

Benefit Refined Finish Facial Polish Review and Swatch

The thing I’ve noticed with the polish is that it will sometimes leave the little gritty bits on my face, so when I’m moisturising (I follow up with Benefit Triple Performing Facial Emulsion and Benefit It’s Potent! Eye Cream, all from the same range,) I’ll notice some of the particles still on my face when I massage the moisturiser in. A minor inconvenience, and this occurs even after I dry my face with a towel, but as this is a review it’s worth mentioning :P
The combination of alternation (I like the beginning of this sentence,) leaves my skin nice and soft – although I have noticed that my cheeks get a little dry. This is rectified by using the moisturiser straight after scrubbing/washing my face and then, if needed, topping up with it during the day (or a handbag friendly moisturiser of choice.)

Benefit Refined Finish Facial Polish Review and Swatch

Rating: 8/10. I really like this. I want to give it 10/10 but there’s two things.
First, the fact that some of the scrub bits are left on my face despite rinsing and drying annoys me.
Secondly, I’ve noticed that even if I shake up the bottle, when I first try to squeeze some out on my hand I get some kinda watery liquid from it (probably where it has settled,) and that annoys me too.
I can’t moan about the price, even if I’m a student. Don’t get me wrong, £17.50 is a lot, for a face scrub, but considering that a) you don’t use it every day and b) a little bit goes a LONG way (as with a lot of Benefit skincare products, I’ve noticed,) I shouldn’t moan.
The product smells lovely, it’s only lightly scented – like the other Benefit products from this range – and of course, the packaging I love.
Alongside the Foamingly Clean Facial Wash, Triple Performing Facial Emulsion and It’s Potent! Eye Cream, I think I’ve found my ‘holy grail’ morning skincare routine. Yay!

I bought mine for £17.50 in my local Boots, because I like my clubcard points, but Debenhams also sell Benefit products (and they have a similar Beauty Card,) and you can always buy it from their website anyway.
If you want to try it without paying for the whole bottle, you can either visit your local Benefit counter and ask for a sample (you might have to make a purchase, depending on the Benebabes serving,) or buy their mini B.Right! Radiant Skincare Kit, which contains mini versions of the whole range. Next I’d like to get the Moisture Prep Toning Lotion, but for the rest of the month I’m on a spending ban (we’ll see how that lasts. HA. I have a lot of things in my queue to review though, never fear!)

Also, I’m back on placement!
God damn, my feet hurt. Does anyone have any foot creams/solutions to dry, hard skin on the soles due to standing up/walking all of the time? I love inpatient work though, it’s where my heart lies. This is my final placement. It’s scary – 3 years of training and in 4 months I will be a qualified Mental Health Nurse, with all of the responsibilities of a Staff Nurse, all of the difficulties but also all of the pleasures. Being a student has been amazing and, to be honest, I’m kinda scared of qualifying. But the NHS has an amazing preceptorship programme where; for at least the first 6 months of your employment; you have what is similar to a ‘mentor’ that we have at the moment as students. Basically they help you continue bridging the gap (that I’m starting to build now,) by supporting you in your first job as a qualified. Scary stuff – but exciting!

If my current work continues the way it has been, I’ll be graduating with a first class honours degree. I’m quite academic, so although it’s not really a surprise, it’s still important as I’m the first and only person in my family to graduate from university :) Including my extended family. My Nan (on Mum’s side,) cried when she heard I got in to university, bless her. She’ll cry so much at my graduation. My Mum’s proud of me, even though our relationship is quite cold (she’s never been overly affectionate, and neither have I, we are very different people, but it’s fine,) and my Dad is too. I’m sure my little bros would be if they understood. Perhaps I should show you guys my little brothers…

photo(10)alexrockbabd

My boys ;) The older one is Phillip, who is 8 this year, and Alex who is nearly 4. The one of Alex was taken last year in Bulgaria, (where my Dad kinda lives, it’s complicated.) He’s fantastic at the drums in Beatle’s Rockband. I actually have a video of it, but I doubt you guys would wanna see it :P He sings “Lello SumbaBean” instead of Yellow Submarine. Aw, kids.
Sorry that they’re rubbish iPhone photos, I don’t trust my DSLR around them ;P They’re boys, they break everything. They’re really my half brothers, but I call them my brothers.

So yeah. There’s a sort of update, that’s not even half of the chaos that I call my life. Other than that I’ve got a dissertation to work on, my sign-off book for practice, my management essay, my management module in practice, medication revision, Diablo III coming out next month so I’m trying to complete Diablo II by then, raids to tank in World of Warcraft … Sorry, that got very geeky, very quickly. I’ll stop now, you came here for the review, right?
I’m going to post about my World of Warcraft characters one day, I’m sure I can swing it to make it about fashion ;) Just something for me to indulge myself in.
